Chapter 3
Attempting the Impossible

After the students had somewhat recovered from the shock of seeing their principal turn into a wolf, they were led by teachers to their homeroom classes, which had been announced shortly after Mr. Sadimi had transformed. Sara and Nelma both followed a tall, long-legged teacher with a bun in her hair to her classroom. Wow…All of the teachers here can turn into animals? I wonder what kind of animal this teacher is…Maybe a giraffe? She is really tall… Nelma’s mind was full of excited thoughts and questions she was desperate to ask. What would I be? she wondered. It was bizarre to think that she had been living all these years but had no idea that such an extraordinary part of her existed. Suddenly, she became worried. What if I’m not a lamina? What if it’s all a mistake and I shouldn’t be here? Is that why I had no clue about this before? If I really was a lamina, shouldn’t I have known about this somehow? How can I be something and not know it?
At that moment, the group of students arrived at their classroom, and they were escorted to their seats. The teacher smiled at the ten nervous sixth-graders and introduced herself.
“Hello, class,” she said kindly. “My name is Anne Tulvo. I will be your language arts teacher this year. If you ever have any questions, please feel free to come and talk to me.”
A small girl with white-blond braids shyly raised her hand. “Miss Tulvo, if we really can turn into animals, why haven’t we known before? Shouldn’t we have been able to tell if we could do that?”
Miss Tulvo answered, “Well, usually, laminas cannot use their power until they about ten years old or so. Even then, they don’t usually find out about it until they are told. Except for a few very rare cases, it is almost impossible to tell that you are a lamina without scientific tests.”
Nelma felt reassured. It seemed that everybody else in her class was just as nervous as she was.
“I will now start training you to transform into your animals,” Miss Tulvo announced. “One by one, you will come to the front of the room and close your eyes. You must concentrate deeply and search inside for a part of you that you have never acknowledged before.”
The class was silent. Everyone was contemplating the seemingly impossible task set before them.
Miss Tulvo consulted her seating chart. A reddish-blond boy was snoring gently in the back row.
“Ron Sillnacs!” the teacher called out sharply. “Please pay attention and refrain from sleeping in class! Can you tell me what Miss Rugsey just asked?”
Ron jerked his head off the desk. “Huh?” he mumbled groggily.
Miss Tulvo looked somewhat annoyed. “You can be our example, then,” Miss Tulvo said, “Please step up to the front.” Ron slowly rose from his seat and trudged to the front of the classroom. The freckled face had the unhappiest frown imaginable as he stood before the class.
Miss Tulvo walked over to the light switch and dimmed the lights. Then she lifted a plastic cover on the wall to reveal a large, red button. When she pressed it, a hanging lamp was lowered from the ceiling, emitting an unearthly bluish glow.
“Alien abduction!” exclaimed the spiky-haired kid who had defied Mr. Sadimi in the multi-purpose room.
Miss Tulvo glared at him. “You’ll be abducted into detention if you keep interrupting,” she chided. She addressed the entire class. “This light will help you transform.” She directed Ron under the strange blue rays.
Ron stood under the lamp, awkwardly wondering what to do. “Concentrate on transforming,” Miss Tulvo advised him. “Forget everything, ignore everyone, it will only make you nervous. Closing your eyes may help, too.” Ron did as he was told, and after a few seconds of squeezing his eyes shut, he began to twitch slightly. He fell down on all fours, yet not as gracefully as Mr. Sadimi had. Almost instantly, fur as reddish-gold as Ron’s hair covered his body. Dark spots almost like his freckles were sprinkled across his coat. He had a long tail that was just as spotted, and whiskers popped out of his cheeks. His hands and feet had become paws, and his face was now completely cat-like.
“Well done, Ron! Well done!” Miss Tulvo exclaimed. “If I’m not mistaken, it appears you are a leopard!”
The remaining nine students stared at the leopard in awe. It had been odd enough to see the principal transform, but now that a student, someone their own age, had done it, it seemed all the weirder. Miss Tulvo directed Ron to sit at the side of the room, and looked at her seating chart again to find the next student to become an animal.
“Alright, Miss Nelma Thyria, would you come to the front please?”
Nelma felt slightly light-headed with fear as she stood up from her seat and walked to the front of the room. Miss Tulvo smiled comfortingly at her, but Nelma could feel herself begin to tremble.
“The first transformation is always the most stressful,” the teacher addressed the whole class, “After you know how to do it, and what animal you are, it becomes second nature.”
Nelma stepped under the blue light, her head spinning. She could feel all of the other kids watching her, even the leopard-boy. She closed her eyes, trying to calm her rapidly beating heart. Then it happened. It was sudden, it was quick, but she felt every second of it.
Something was growing on her skin. It was all over her, but her mind was taken off of it by an unusual sensation in her knees and elbows that caused her to fall on all fours the way Ron had. Nelma tried to grip the floor with her fingers, only to find that she didn’t have any. Her hands and feet were solid and hard. Her neck had grown out from her body, and so had her nose and mouth. She had a tail, too, and a flowing mane. Her whole body was larger, and felt very muscular.
Realizing that her eyes were still closed, Nelma quickly opened them. She turned her head around on her long neck, and saw the body of a horse behind her. No way, she thought. I’m a horse!
“Well done, Nelma,” Miss Tulvo complimented. “It can’t be easy turning into such a big animal. But I’m sure you’ll enjoy being a horse. You may go stand over by Ron.”
Nelma almost stumbled on her long legs as she walked to the side of the room. It’s going to be hard getting used to walking with reversed elbows and knees, she thought.
Yays! Chapter Three is here! It starts to get more interesting now...oooh...

I had no idea blue lights were so comforting while transforming.
